The Colour of Mother’s Day

There are many faces to colour; and many shades to motherhood. Culture, history, environment and things like light, feel, and even smell all participate.

Intuitively, its accepted that colour reveals the true nature of an object. Colour is the first thing our brain perceives while engaging attention. People assess others, products, and messages in the first 90 seconds – as much as 90% of that assessment is based on colour.

Everyone assigns specific meaning to the colours they identify…. so what is the Colour of Mother’s Day? Movember has the moustache, International Women’s Day has an icon and Breast Cancer Month has the pink ribbon. However, Mother’s Day didn’t have a single representation, until very recently as the result of the Pantone Color Institute conducting a social media campaign to come up with a colour that would “Capture a Mother’s Love”.

It is widely known that colour is a powerful tool that can communicate feelings, moods and physiological reactions. So the experts at the Pantone Colour Institute defined the stories shared by their social media participants into five colours spanning green, yellow, red, pink and blue colour families.

Green represents the protective nature of mothers, while yellow alludes to their optimistic outlook towards life and for their children. Pink captures their compassionate and nurturing side and red focuses on their passion and empowerment drive. At the same time, they are always calm and patient, which is represented by the colour blue.

With the help of customers’ stories about their mothers and emotional cues, a public vote was cast and one colour emerged as the one that strongly represents mothers – it is an inviting floral pink shade.
