I know lots of you out there in the Kerrisdale, Dunbar, Marpole and other surrounding neighbourhoods have the most wonderful green-thumbs! Just look around at all the gorgeous gardens in each and every neighbourhood. So, when I came across this program “Gardening Buddies” offered through Vancouver’s Earthwise Society I had to share!
The program works with seniors and volunteers to pair up people who need assistance, help or just as plain old company in their gardens. Now that COVID-19 restrictions have relaxed a little bit the program is also looking for volunteers who would be willing to work with those that are looking to be a part of the program as well. Garden Buddies is split into two parts:
– Garden Buddies at Home, which has volunteers to go to seniors’ homes to lend a hand with any garden-type assistance such as working together installing bird-feeders or putting together potted plants.
– Garden Buddies on the Go, which arranges excursions for seniors to visit the Earthwise Garden in Delta. Earthwise Society works with seniors’ groups to develop fun, personalized activities for seniors, including gardening, flower arranging, and various social events. This program aims to help seniors stay active and get outside into nature, while making new connections in the community.
Earthwise Society BC also has a wonderful list of workshops available through the rest of August and into September. You can find the full list through the link below.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or if you are interested in signing up for either stream of the program as a volunteer or join the program please check out Earthwise Society BC.
