Stained Glass Church Window

     The Hallman family wanted to place a window at Knox in memory of Eva. The Rev. Dr. Gordon How (Knox 1976-1980, 1983-1987) met with the family, and they discussed the idea of the window art possibly depicting a Parable. The Hallmans chose the Parable of the Mustard seed. The mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that birds can come and perch in its branches. The images suggested by the artist appealed to the Hallman family, and so the window came to be.

     Look at the picture and enjoy the window art that has captivated so many over the years. Many a child (and adult) has studied the window carefully to spy the following:

    • the Kingdom structure, like the walls and gates of a castle
    • the huge tree that started as a tiny mustard seed
    • the birds seeking rest and protection in the tree branches
    • the sun on one side and the moon on the other
    • the tiny mustard seed

On the east wall of the Knox sanctuary is a magical stained glass window which depicts the Parable of the Mustard Seed. The memorial information below it reads:

     The Hallmans particularly loved the artist’s decision to use a small crystal-like piece of glass for the seed, to cast a different light coming through the window, and the images of the birds sheltered in the branches.
