About Ben Brown – Drummer

I am a mover and shaker. I am the founder of Music And Movement Mondays (MAMM). As a drummer, I have received a Juno Award with my group, Pugs and Crows. Currently, I’m exploring principles of sound felt in the body and researching a series of designed percussion instruments crafted by Roxanne Nesbitt. With these, I am trying to push the boundaries of drumming by using movement to communicate the energy of sound— helping an audience hear differently by creating and breaking expectations for a sound through gesture. benbrownsounds.com

About Tamar Tabori – Dancer/Videographer

Tamar Tabori is a Canadian-Israeli contemporary dance artist and experimental filmmaker, currently residing on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples; the Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam) Nations. She received a BFA in Contemporary Dance from Montreal’s Concordia University where she worked with convergent streams of arts and media in the realization of cohesive performances. Tamar maintains an active engagement with the dance community, locally, nationally, and internationally, using digital platforms as sites of creative exchange and connectivity. She has worked on interdisciplinary projects at the intersections of dance, film, sound, live music, spoken word, and more. Her experimental short films have been screened at festivals such as F-O-R-M, NorthWest Film Forum, Art Volt: Watch and Listen, and Moving Images Screendance Festival. As an emerging artist, she seeks to explore the tension between dance and the digital landscape.

About Roxanne Nesbitt – The Instrument Maker

Trained as an architect and orchestral contrabassist, I’m an interdisciplinary artist, exploring the space between sound and design.

My research includes sound art, music composition, experimental instrument design, electroacoustic music, improvisation and performance. As a performer and composer, I collaborate with musicians, dancers and choreographers.

About the Performance

Upon re-listening, this music seems to be inspired by the repetitive interlocking rhythms of Mbira from Zimbabwe and the spontaneous energy of Amsterdam’s improv scene. As a musician, I spent time in both Capetown and Holland just before the pandemic hit one year ago this month. The compositions here are completely improvised. The bells were selected from a larger collection of handmade ceramics made by Roxanne Nesbitt. The bells were chosen by how they sounded together. These untethered instruments have no manual as to how they should be played and no map directing the music where to go. What a thrill it is to play these bells in all their freedom of expression. I met Tamar Tabori this past summer for an outdoor improvised performance. I am struck by the creative fluidity Tamar exudes as both a mover and film artist. Our duo performance is also improvised, made up of minimal discussion and much trust. Thank you to Tracy, Knox Church, Stretch Vancouver, Tamar and Roxanne Nesbitt for her exquisite instruments and help filming/directing the session.

Community Partner

Our Community Partner for this highlight is STRETCH

Stretch was founded by  Boyd Thomson and Emmanuelle Rousseau who decided to collaborate to offer the yoga they had been seeking to their own neighbourhood and community, bringing together teachers who are committed to their practice and dedicated to their students.

Stretch community offers yoga as an empowering and transformative practice. We believe that yoga is more than asana and should be available to everyone, regardless of ability, body type and age. We admire and encourage endless pursuit of knowledge and believe that yoga can be a catalyst for community building and social change. By holding space for conversation and dialogue, we can examine together, in the context of present day yoga, how it can affect and empower each of us. Stretch is deeply committed to continuing education and yoga research.

We hold high standards of respect and inclusion. 2021 will continue to bring small yet important changes on how we present our space and welcome our staff, volunteers, students and guests. STRETCH is committed to the transformation of society into one that promotes social justice and freedom from oppression, including, but not limited to, racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, and ableism.
