The Stories of the First Family Dynasty in the Bible
A New Sermon Series: May 30 to June 27, 2021
Series Synopsis: The Bible is a collection of stories. It is filled with the stories of God’s people trying to understand their relationship with God and with one another. It is the stories of the good, the bad, and ugly people. It is the stories of families who struggled to live faithfully and often failed miserably. And it is the stories of how God related with them in a covenant relationship. In this series, we will cover the stories of the first four generations of the family dynasty in Genesis: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. And as we retrace and retell the stories of first families, let’s retrace and share the stories of our own family of origin. How was Life back then? How did your parents meet? Who in your family of origin sacrificed the most to pave the way for the next generation? What was the strength and weakness of your family of origin? What was the main challenge? And how did your family of origin offer forgiveness and reconciliation? And — where was God in all this?
Families and Forgiveness
Text: Genesis37:1-11, 45:1-15, The Story of Joseph
Joseph was favoured by his parents but hated by his brothers. They sold him to travelling merchants and he eventually ended up in a foreign country as a slave. But the resentment and the hardship did not change his character and faith in God. Joseph forgave his brothers when they met years later. All families have the good, the bad, and the ugly stories. Families need to offer forgiveness and practice reconciliation continuously.

Life’s Greatest Battle
Text: Genesis 32:22-31
Jacob wrestles with God
God’s angel comes to Jacob on the night before he meets with Esau and wrestles with him. Jacob struggles mightily and wins the match. God blesses him. Life is a series of struggles and battles to overcome. But not every battle will lead us to Life. We have to pick the right battle and fight the good fight.
Overcoming Your Achilles’ Heel Syndrome
Text: Genesis 25:19-28
“The Saga of the First Twins
(Esau and Jacob)”
Esau was the firstborn and stronger than his twin brother, Jacob. He had everything going for him, but he never took it seriously. He threw it all away. His strongest link was his weakest link, his Achilles’ Heel. We are all born with strength and weakness. Sometimes, our strongest link can be our Achilles’ Heel, our downfall, if we throw it away by wasting it.
Life’s Ultimate Sacrifice
Text: Genesis 22:1-19
Abraham Sacrifices Isaac
God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering. Abraham obeyed the command to sacrifice Isaac. God intervenes, right before Abraham was about to slay Isaac, to save him. Life gives us treasures and takes away from us. Ultimately, Reality demands us to sacrifice what we cherish the most for the greater good of all. That is how the covenant relationship works between God (the Reality/Life) and us. Sacrifice must be made. And the world will prosper.
Capital Project Donations provide Knox the foundation to build and be a committed member of our neighbourhoods. Decades of fund raising allowed the purchase and maintenance of our building. They supported the never ending ‘projects’ which come with property ownership ~ repave the parking lot, fix the roof, etc., leading to today and greater potential.
This ongoing help is needed and appreciated for today and the years ahead.
