Advent is the beginning of the church year observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for celebrating the birth of Jesus at Christmas and the return of Jesus at the Second Coming. (Advent is a version of the Latin word meaning “coming”.) In this advent season, we prepare for the coming of Christ by nesting Hope, making Peace, sharing Joy, and manifesting Love in the world.

Nesting Hope
Communion Sunday,
Knox 110th Anniversary
Based on text:
Mark 13: 24-37
Jesus says, “Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come.” The followers of Jesus Christ must be on the watch for that “day” by living our days conveying and nesting hope for the people living in a world filled with fear and uncertainty.

Making Peace
Based on text:
Isaiah 40:1-11
How do you prepare for the coming Christ, the Prince of Peace, so that Christmas truly becomes a life-affirming, joy-filled, Love abound miracle of God that shines bright all around us even in the darkest of dark December? We work to make peace by comforting and speaking tenderly to all in our relations.
Sharing Joy
Based on text:
Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11
Prophet Isaiah declares Jubilee, “year of the Lord’s favor” to the Israelites. The Jubilee is a giant do-over; you get a second chance. Jesus goes deeper. For Jesus, it’s a do-over world, every day. He says to forgive seventy times seven – to forgive always. Jesus calls us to share joy to the world by living the life of do-overs, the life of forgiveness.
Manifesting Love
Based on: Luke 1:26-38
God’s angel visited the Virgin Mary and offered her God’s favour to bear the Son of God. Once she accepted the favour, she had to endure much hardship. That is how God’s miracle usually works – to benefit many through the suffering of one. In this and every Christmas season, we are called by God to manifest Love for the world. It requires much courage from us and willingness to endure hardship.
