Every Wednesday at 10 am
Starting September 15

For those interested in getting deeper with the Narrative Lectionary texts, stories, and sermons, we are pleased to offer a Narrative Lectionary Study session each week, every Wednesday at 10 in the morning. This is a weekly zoom drop-in discussion session.

Take a listen to this Zoom Recording of one of our study sessions:

Please review the Discussion Guide, the Text Readings, and Worship Synopsis below on this page for each week prior to the Zoom sessions. Printable downloads for each are also attached to this webpage.

Narrative Lectionary Discussion Guide

The discussion guide is in three parts for preparation and sharing for each session.

  1. Know the Story: “What is the story about?”
  • Read the text in two different translations (recommendation: NRSV and the Message) 3 times.
  • Paraphrase or summarize the main story in your own words (articulate and know the text/story in your own words)
  1. Meditate the Story: “What does the story teach?”
  • What surprises and questions do you have from the story?
  • What resonates (or dissociates) you the most from the story?
  • How does the story fit into the main context of the bigger story (meta narrative)?
  • What do you think are the main ideas, principles, or points in the story?
  • What does the story teach you (theological reflection)?
  1. Live the Story: “How does the story apply to your life?”
  • How does the story apply to your life, right now?
  • What are the key changes (actions) do you need to make in your own life based on your reflection of the story?
  • Please feel free to ask your own questions.
  • Please make use of the resources and commentaries available from the internet (Wikipedia is a good source for a quick introduction and commentary on the stories)
  • Also, please visit the Working Preacher’s website for the overall information on the Narrative Lectionary resources.
