Food Memories with a Dash and a Smidge

The Sense of Smell is one of the 5 senses that is linked with bringing back some of our strongest memories. Our sense of smell also assists us with our ability to taste and there for it makes “sense” that so many people would have such strong memories linked to food. In fact, food and the culinary experience can provide us as humans with the opportunity to create with all five of our senses and create an opportunity to foster connection and belonging that we hold in our hearts for our entire lives.

Below are some Food Memories that our community has shared with us – does it make you recall a favorite memory of your own? Do you do have a similar memory? How about a drastically different one? How to you plan to cultivate and share new memories?

     Flour All Over

“One of the strongest food memories I have is baking bread with my grandfather – the whole kitchen would be covered in flour by the end of the process. Afterwards, my mother would find flour on top of the cupboards, inside pots and pans that weren’t even used and once down the hall and around the corner from the kitchen! He used to say ‘If there isn’t flour everywhere – you’ve done it wrong!’ I think today I carry with me his meaning ‘If you didn’t have fun – you’ve done it wrong’”

Food is not rational. Food is culture, habit, craving and identity.”
