Hello Knox submitted by Susan McAlpine
Hello Knox! With some extra time this spring, Old McAlpine’s farm has grown larger. We’re trying out square foot and container gardening to maximize food production. The biggest trick was organizing the plants so that companions could stay together, and those that don’t get along very well could maintain physical distancing!
Most of the plants have been started from seed, with a few more mature seedlings purchased to kick things off. The list includes green & yellow beans, carrots, peas, radishes, beets, leeks, Walla Walla onions, yellow onions, red onions, green onions, garlic, chives, kale, chard, arugula, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, bok choy, tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, and cucumbers. The herb pots contain parsley, watercress, thyme, mint, oregano, basil, and sage, along with a bay tree we’ve been cultivating in a large pot for several years now. In the fruit department, we have rhubarb, blueberries, strawberries, and Saskatoon berries. We finished off with a few organic pest management flowers, including alyssum, marigolds, and nasturtiums.
They say gardening is an act of optimism. How will it all grow? Only time will tell.
