When God Comes Too Close

After hearing the commandments, the people tremble and ask Moses to stand between them and God. We long for God’s presence, but we often prefer it at a manageable distance. At the Communion table, God comes close – not as something we can control, but as grace we receive.

From the night at the sea to Moses’ final view of the promised land, Israel discovers that freedom does not end fear, hunger, doubt, or failure. Again and again, the deeper question is whether God is truly among them. We will follow these stories without avoiding their difficult parts, learning a faith that can question, grieve, wrestle and still remain.
