Waiting for Jesus: An Advent Invitation to Prayer and Renewal

Advent Book Study w/Rev. Aaron Miller
This book covers a 25-day devotional aimed at slowing down and rediscovering a spiritual waiting discipline. It explores two biblical themes through many verses including:
- Anticipation of Christ’s Return: The biblical call for believers to wait with watchfulness in an active manner, living faith for the return of the Lord. For example, the passages:
- 1 Corinthians 1:7: “…waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- Philippians 3:20-21: “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ…”
- Hebrews 9:28: “…Christ, who offered himself once to bear the sins of many, will appear without sin a second time to those who wait for him for their salvation.”
- Matthew 24:36-44 & Matthew 25:1-13: These passages, including the Parable of the Ten Virgins, are used to illustrate the importance of preparedness and alertness while waiting.
- Revelation 22:12: “Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me…”
- The Discipline of Waiting on God: Old Testament scriptures, as those in Psalms, highlight worship and spiritual energy being renewed through trust in God. For example, the passages:
- Isaiah 40:31: “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles…”
- Psalm 27:14: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
- Lamentations 3:25: “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.”
The book builds a spiritual journey from waiting in a passive state of delay, to expectation and then transformation, into an active, intentional, and hope-filled faith, peace, and renewal centered on Jesus Christ
